Arba'een

See main article: Arba'een

The month of Safar holds significance for the day of Arba'een (literally meaning forty), alluding to 40 days after the day of Ashura. Forty days is a typical length of time of mourning in many Islamic cultures and Shi'as commemorate the day by holding mourning ceremonies and public processions. After the fall of Saddam Hussein, the day of Arba'een has consistently seen some of the world's largest peaceful gatherings taking place in the city of Karbala with millions of pilgrims visiting from all over the world.
