Mahr (Arabic: مهر‎) is a mandatory gift (usually money, but not always) paid by the groom to the bride which she can use or spend as she wishes. It is a pre-requisite in both permanent marriage as well as in a fixed-term marriage, with the only difference being that it is not obligatory to specify the mahr in permanent marriage, but in a temporary marriage failure to specify the mahr will make the marriage invalid.[1][2]
